                                              FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I book a performance?

Write to us through the Contact Us page, call us at 630.323.7493, or fax your information to us at 630.323.7424. We look forward to hearing from you.

Where can I see one of your performances?

Roberts Marionettes performs primarily in schools and libraries within a 50-mile radius of Chicago. Contact us regarding your availability, and we'll discuss possible dates.

What kinds of stories do you present?

Folktales are our primary focus, with two productions adapted from literary classics completing the repertoire.

What age of audience is suggested?

Folktales appeal to all ages. Our usual audience is school-age, but pre-schoolers respond well when they are accustomed to a school environment. (Three-year-olds are usually too young to predictably be engaged by the performance.) Retirement villagers enjoy watching the mechanics of the art form and appreciate seeing the folktales of their youth from a mature perspective. The productions are especially appropriate as inter-generational/family entertainment. We also perform for birthday parties.

What size of audience is suggested?

Ideally, no more than 250.

How long is the performance?

The entire program lasts about forty minutes. The presentation of the story is followed by a demonstration of the stringing and vocal work and a question-and-answer session with the audience.

Do you need a stage?

It's usually preferable to set up our marionette stage on the stage in your auditorium. In a multi-purpose room, a portable stage or a raised area is desirable. In the absence of extra elevation, your audience will still be able to see well as long as they are seated on the floor--no chairs, please.

How much room do you need for the marionette stage?

A footprint of about 10' x 10' is adequate, and a ceiling height of 8' is required.

What else do you need?

An electrical outlet and an audience.

How long does it take to set up your stage?

The puppeteer arrives about an hour before the performance to set up the stage. She will need help transporting the equipment to and from the performance location.

Do you perform outdoors?

Hardly ever.

What is the fee for a performance?

Fees vary depending on when, where, and the number of times the show is performed. Please call 630.323.7493 for our rate structure.

How long does it take to produce a new show?

Linda Roberts and Fred Sauers generally spend about three months creating all the elements of a new production.

Do you offer productions tailored to the holidays?

Roberts Marionettes does not perform topical shows. Our goal is to present a seasoned production instead of one which we would perform for only a few weeks.

What's the difference between a puppet and a marionette?

Puppet is a generic term referring to any inanimate object manipulated by a person. There are many types of puppets moved in various ways. A marionette is a puppet moved from above by strings, although some puppets suspended from rigid rods are also classified as marionettes.
