In the North of the Land of Oz, in the purple Country of the Gillikins, there lived a youth called Tip. The treacherous Mombi was Tip’s guardian.
One day Tip took a notion to manufacture a stick man with a ‘Jack Lantern’ head and to frighten Mombi with it. Mombi was not pleased by Tip's trick. After using her magic to bring Jack Pumpkinhead to life, she prepared to transform Tip into a marble statue.
Tip and Jack fled from Mombi's spells. They journeyed to the green Emerald City to seek the help of His Majesty, the Scarecrow. (You may remember that the Scarecrow was one of Dorothy's companions in her quest to return to Kansas.)
Alas, not even all the Scarecrow's brains could protect the fugitives from Mombi's evil powers. Tip, Jack Pumpkinhead, and the Scarecrow were now forced to escape to the red Land of the Quadlings to appeal to Glinda the Good for her advice.
Glinda had not only equal cunning but also more experience in magic than Mombi, so Mombi was soon captured. She confessed that she had enchanted the rightful ruler of the Emerald City and proceeded to relate the astonishing secret of Tip's past.
L. Frank Baum’s sequel to “The Wizard of Oz” features Tip’s quest for freedom
and the struggle between Mombi and Glinda the Good.
A uniquely American classic.
